October on the Central Coast: My Favorite Fall Activities to Do With Kids

By Teri McKay

Your 2026 guide to pumpkin patches, fall festivals, Halloween fun and making memories in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Maria.

I don't know about you, but there is something about October that makes me want to slow down just a little and soak up every bit of this season with my kids.

Maybe it's the pumpkins on the porch, the excitement of picking out Halloween costumes, or watching the kids experience all these little traditions that I hope they'll remember forever.

As a mom of two, I've realized that some of my favorite days aren't the ones where we have some big elaborate plan. They're the mornings we grab coffee, load everyone into the car and head out to explore somewhere local.

And one of the things I absolutely love about raising our family on California's Central Coast is that we get to experience fall in our own unique way.

Pumpkin patches in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, and sometimes we're still wearing shorts in October. It's the best of both worlds.

So whether you're a local parent looking for something fun to do this weekend, or you're thinking about moving to the Central Coast with your family, here are some of the places and activities I'd put on your October bucket list.

1. Visit the Nipomo Pumpkin Patch

668 Eucalyptus Road, Nipomo

Let's start with one we've actually experienced as a family!

We visited the Nipomo Pumpkin Patch for the first time this year, and I was genuinely blown away by the variety of pumpkins.

I'm talking the tiniest little pumpkins you've ever seen, unique colors and shapes, and giant pumpkins that can weigh hundreds of pounds!

One thing I especially loved was learning that this is a family-owned operation that's been around for approximately 20 years. Each year's pumpkins are a new crop, and some varieties take three to four months to grow.

They even have etched pumpkins, which I thought were so unique.

If you're looking for a more traditional pumpkin-picking experience, this is such a fun place to take the kids. And I love that we're supporting a local family business at the same time.

2. Spend a fall morning at Avila Valley Barn

560 Avila Beach Drive, San Luis Obispo

This is one of those places that just feels like the Central Coast to me.

You can pick out pumpkins, visit the farm animals, enjoy a hayride, grab something delicious from the market and make an entire morning out of it.

They also offer seasonal pony rides, which can be such a fun experience for little ones.

My ideal fall morning here would be coffee for the parents, plenty of time for the kids to explore, and a sweet treat before heading home.

And the best part? You're so close to Avila Beach that you can easily turn it into a full family day.

3. Explore Brookshire Farms in San Luis Obispo

4747 Los Osos Valley Road, San Luis Obispo

If you have kids who need to get some energy out, this one deserves a spot on your list.

Brookshire Farms has a corn maze, hayrides, jumping activities, play areas and, of course, plenty of pumpkins.

I love finding places where the kids can run around, explore and just be kids.

This is one I'd plan a little extra time for because there's quite a bit to do.

For families with younger children, I'd recommend checking which activities are age-appropriate before heading out.

4. Take the kids to Pumpkins in the Park in Pismo Beach

October 24, 2026 | 10 AM to 1 PM

Dinosaur Caves Park, 131 Cliff Avenue, Pismo Beach

If you've never been to Dinosaur Caves Park, it's worth visiting even when there isn't an event happening.

The ocean views are beautiful, the playground is such a fun place for kids, and there's plenty of space to enjoy being outside.

On October 24, Pismo Beach is hosting Pumpkins in the Park, with pumpkin decorating, games, crafts, a costume contest and bounce houses.

And admission is free!

Downtown trick-or-treating is also scheduled for noon to 2 PM, so you could make an entire morning of it.

Honestly, these are the kinds of community events that make me so grateful to live here.

5. Make a day of it at SLO Ranch Farms & Marketplace

851 Froom Ranch Way, San Luis Obispo

If you're looking for another fun fall outing, add SLO Ranch Farms & Marketplace to your list.

They have seasonal pumpkins, a corn maze, farm animals and weekend activities that can include hayrides and bounce houses.

I especially love places where you can combine something fun for the kids with grabbing local produce or a treat to take home.

It's an easy way to turn an ordinary weekend into a little family adventure.

6. Enjoy a not-too-spooky Halloween event

October 18, 23 and 24, 2026

With little kids, I personally love the idea of Halloween activities that are festive without being too scary.

A couple worth checking out this year:

Boo-Tanical Garden, October 18: The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is hosting a family-friendly event with nature crafts and a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt.

Zoo Boo, October 23 and 24: The Central Coast Zoo in Atascadero is hosting Halloween activities, costumes, games and treats.

I think it's so special that our local communities create these kinds of experiences for families.

7. Take a fall walk through the Village of Arroyo Grande

Not every October outing needs to involve tickets, reservations or a packed schedule.

Sometimes I think the simplest plans are the sweetest.

One of my favorite things about Arroyo Grande is the Village. It's charming, walkable and filled with local businesses.

I'd make a morning out of grabbing coffee, walking across the historic swinging bridge, browsing a few shops and letting the kids enjoy some time outside.

It's also a beautiful reminder that fall on the Central Coast doesn't have to look like fall everywhere else.

We may not have all the changing leaves you see on the East Coast, but we have our own version of seasonal magic.

8. Plan a beach afternoon in Pismo or Avila

I know. A beach day on an October bucket list?

But that's exactly why I love living here.

October can bring some absolutely beautiful coastal days, and sometimes the best thing you can do with your family is pack snacks, bring a blanket and head to the ocean.

Pismo Beach and Avila Beach are both wonderful options for a laid-back afternoon.

Let the kids play in the sand, grab something to eat nearby and enjoy the fact that we get to call this place home.

No big production needed.

9. Make Halloween traditions at home

This might actually be my favorite part of October.

Picking out costumes. Decorating the front porch. Carving pumpkins. Watching Halloween movies together. Driving through neighborhoods to look at decorations.

All those little moments that might seem ordinary now but end up becoming the memories our kids carry with them.

As a working mom, I know how easy it is to get caught up in everything we need to accomplish.

But I'm trying to be more intentional about making space for these moments.

Because the kids are only little once, and I want to enjoy this season of life while we're in it.

Why I love raising a family on the Central Coast

I talk a lot about real estate, but what I really love talking about is the lifestyle that comes with living here.

It's not just about the house you purchase.

It's about the community you become part of.

The pumpkin patch you visit every October. The beach where your kids learn to build sandcastles. The local businesses that start to feel like familiar friends. The neighborhood where your family makes memories.

Whether you're raising a family in Nipomo, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach or Santa Maria, there's so much to appreciate about this little corner of California.

And I feel incredibly grateful that we get to experience it.
